Massive glitchy-ness

Hey, sorry for the obscure title but Supremacy for me is completely FUBAR, to the extent I have trouble describing it let alone searching for a solution.

When I ran the game in the applet it worked fine, everything loaded as it should and could be left open for ages without anything going wrong.

Now we have switched back to the java window thingy it's broken.

I hit play game, it starts loading, it pops up and everything is fine.

But after about 30 seconds the economy (military view as well just not as badly) gets mucked up, nigh on all of the resource icons disappear. They only reappear if you mouse over exactly where the icon is. On top of this the various windows (trade, diplomacy and the army status) all glitch out with different bits disappearing and reappearing.

After about a minute of everything being barely playable the whole freezes up and I have to re-load the game.

It's not a specific game because it happens in all 3 of my games.

I have tested it in the latest builds of IE and Chrome.

Graphics drivers are up to date.

System is a windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i5 with 8gb of RAM.

Java itself seems stable enough (never had an issue on another website and Minecraft runs fine).

Does anyone have any suggestions? =(
